According to ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases), we speak of addiction when at least three of these criteria have emerged simultaneously in the first year and persisted for at least one month or have occurred again a shorter or longer period.

Criteria by Aviel Goodman
Of common diagnostic criteria for addiction have also been established in 1990 by Aviel Goodman, American psychiatrist who gave a definition of addiction.
"This is a process which is carried out in a behavior that can have the function of providing pleasure and relieve internal discomfort, and is characterized by the repeated failure of its control and persistence in spite of negative consequences."
The criteria are similar to those of the defining criteria of the DSM-IV and ICD-10.
